Our Approach
Fear Free Grooming at The Groom Room
Because how your pet feels during grooming matters.
At The Groom Room Pet Salon, we believe a successful groom is about more than a beautiful haircut. Your pet's emotional comfort, physical safety, and trust are just as important as the finished result.
That's why Brandie has completed the Fear Free Groomer Certification and incorporates Fear Free principles into both her grooming techniques and the way our salon operates.
What Is Fear Free Grooming?
Fear Free grooming is an approach designed to help reduce fear, anxiety, and stress during the grooming process.
Pets can't tell us with words when something is becoming too much — but they communicate with us constantly through their body language and behavior. Fear Free education helps groomers recognize those signals earlier and respond appropriately.
Instead of thinking only:
“How do we finish this groom?”
We also ask:
“How is this pet feeling, and what can we do to make this easier for them?”
That simple difference can completely change a pet's grooming experience.
What Does That Mean for Your Pet?
There isn't one grooming method that works for every animal. A confident adult dog may happily walk into the salon and enjoy the entire process. A puppy might need time to understand the dryer. A senior dog may need extra support and breaks. A nervous rescue may need grooming introduced gradually. And a cat may become overwhelmed by noises and activity that don't bother a dog.
We adjust our approach to the pet in front of us. Depending on your pet, that may include:
- Watching closely for signs of fear, anxiety, or stress
- Introducing unfamiliar equipment gradually
- Using gentle, thoughtful handling and positioning
- Providing positive reinforcement when appropriate
- Giving your pet breaks when needed
- Reducing unnecessary noise and stimulation
- Adjusting the order or method of the groom
- Allowing additional time when appropriate
- Modifying a service when continuing would create unnecessary stress
Our goal isn't to see how much your pet will tolerate. It's to build trust while providing the grooming care they need.
What Makes This Different From Grooming You May Have Experienced Before?
Many pets are accustomed to busy grooming environments with multiple animals, dryers, barking, phones, people moving around, and grooming equipment operating at the same time. Some pets handle that environment perfectly well. Others don't.
At The Groom Room, we've intentionally designed our approach and salon environment to give us more ways to accommodate the pets who need something different. We're not interested in treating grooming like an assembly line or expecting every animal to fit into exactly the same routine.
That doesn't mean your pet will never experience stress or dislike part of grooming. Grooming involves necessary handling and procedures that some animals simply don't enjoy. Fear Free principles give us additional tools to recognize that discomfort, avoid unnecessary escalation, and create the most positive experience we reasonably can.
Sometimes, We May Not Finish Everything — and That's Okay.
There may be times when we recommend changing, shortening, or stopping part of a grooming service because your pet is becoming too overwhelmed.
For example, we'd rather send home a pet with an imperfect haircut than push a frightened animal past its limits simply to make the haircut look perfect.
Because we're thinking about the next appointment, too.
Repeatedly forcing a scared pet through an experience can make future grooming more difficult. When possible, we want your pet to learn that their groomer is someone they can trust.
Sometimes progress looks like completing an entire groom.
Sometimes progress looks like getting through the bath and dryer calmly when that was difficult last time.
Both can be successes.
Our Salon Was Designed With Comfort in Mind
Fear Free principles aren't limited to what happens on the grooming table. We've incorporated comfort and stress reduction into the physical environment at The Groom Room as well.
Separate Quiet Room
We have a separate, enclosed quiet room for cats, senior pets, shy pets, and animals who may become overwhelmed by the activity of the main salon.
Sound Reduction
Our equipment includes sound-absorbing mufflers designed to help reduce high-decibel noise — especially helpful for pets sensitive to grooming dryers and other salon sounds.
Hydraulic Tubs & Tables
Our hydraulic equipment can be lowered to help reduce unnecessary lifting and jumping — particularly important for senior dogs, giant breeds, and pets with mobility limitations.
Cushioned, Non-Slip Surfaces
Our tubs, grooming tables, and crates have cushioned, non-slip mats to provide better footing and additional comfort, especially for stiff or aging joints.
Softened & Filtered Water
Our bathing stations use softened and filtered water as part of providing a gentle, high-quality bathing experience.
Clean & Sanitized Equipment
Grooming stations and equipment are cleaned and disinfected between pets, and we use UV disinfection stations for grooming tools and brushes as an additional part of our sanitation practices.
What Does This Mean for You as a Pet Parent?
It means communication matters here. We want to know about your pet before we start. Bringing your pet's favorite treat or toy is highly encouraged.
If your dog is terrified of dryers, tell us. If they don't like having their feet touched, tell us. If your senior dog struggles to stand for long periods, we want to know. If your cat had a frightening grooming experience somewhere else, that's valuable information too.
There is no embarrassment or judgment in telling us that your pet struggles with something.
The more we understand about your pet, the better we can plan their appointment. And if we notice something during the groom that may affect future appointments, we'll communicate that with you as well.
Pet parents are part of the team.
Building Better Grooming Experiences Takes Time
Fear Free grooming isn't about promising that every pet will immediately love grooming. It's about approaching grooming differently.
For pets who are nervous or have had difficult experiences in the past, building comfort may take multiple visits. We may recommend shorter appointments, regular maintenance, or other changes that help us gradually build a better routine. Our goal is to develop a relationship with your pet — not simply complete one appointment.
Continued Education Matters to Us
Fear Free Groomer Certification is also part of our larger commitment to continued professional education. Our salon's certifications include:
Grooming techniques, animal behavior, and best practices continue to evolve. Staying current with professional education is part of how we provide the best possible care for your pet.
